Share the Actual Story, Not Just an Instagram Link
You can send a story you already posted on Instagram to WhatsApp Status from the Instagram app. The important part is choosing the right sharing option. One option posts a link that opens your Instagram story. The other brings the photo, video, and audio from the story into WhatsApp as a status.
This works from the story screen on iPhone and Android, including Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones. Start by opening the Instagram story you want to share.

Share an Instagram Story Link to WhatsApp Status
Use this method when you want your WhatsApp contacts to tap your status and go to Instagram. WhatsApp will post a link to the story instead of the story photo or video itself.
- Open Instagram.
- Select your profile icon to view the story you posted.
- With the story open, select Send in the bottom-right corner.
- Select WhatsApp.
- In WhatsApp, select My Status.
- Select Send to publish it.
Your WhatsApp Status now contains a link to that Instagram story. When someone selects the status, it takes them to Instagram. This is useful if your goal is to direct people to your Instagram account or story.
Share the Photo or Video to WhatsApp Status
If you want WhatsApp to show the actual Instagram story content, go back and use Share from the story instead. This method copies the story into WhatsApp so your contacts can view it as a normal status update.
- If you are still on the WhatsApp screen from the first method, select the X to cancel and return to Instagram.
- Open the Instagram story again if needed.
- Select Share on the story screen.
- Select WhatsApp.
- WhatsApp opens with the story ready to post.
- Select Status at the bottom of the WhatsApp screen.
- Choose who you want to share the status with.
- Select the Share icon to publish it.
After posting, open WhatsApp and go to Updates. Your new item appears under My Status. It contains the story you shared from Instagram rather than only a link back to Instagram.
Which Share Option Should You Use?
The two options have different results, even though both start from your Instagram story. Choosing the right one prevents you from posting the wrong type of WhatsApp Status.
- Send, then WhatsApp: Posts a link to your Instagram story. People select the WhatsApp Status to open Instagram.
- Share, then WhatsApp: Brings the story into WhatsApp as status content. Use this for the actual photo, video, or story audio.
If your status opens Instagram when you expected to see the video or image directly in WhatsApp, you used the first method. Delete or cancel that post, return to the Instagram story, and use Share followed by WhatsApp.
Check the Status After Posting
A quick check in WhatsApp confirms that the correct version was shared. Open WhatsApp, select Updates, and look under My Status. Select your status to review what your contacts will see.
If it opens Instagram, it is the link version. If you see the image or video from the story in WhatsApp, you shared the content version. You can use either option for a posted Instagram story, depending on whether you want people to visit Instagram or view the story inside WhatsApp.
Keep the Two Apps Ready Before You Share
Because the process sends you from Instagram to WhatsApp, make sure you are using the WhatsApp account where you want the status to appear. Then select your intended audience when WhatsApp shows the Status option. Once you select the final Share icon, check Updates to make sure the story appears as expected.
For the fastest cross-post, use the Instagram story screen directly. You do not need to save the photo or video first and upload it again manually. Choose Share, select WhatsApp, set it as a status, and publish it.
