What SOS Only Means on Your iPhone
If your iPhone shows SOS or SOS Only where you normally see your carrier signal, it is not connected to your wireless carrier. You may still be able to make emergency calls, but normal cellular service is unavailable. That means calls, texts, and mobile data may not work as expected.
The cause can be your SIM card, eSIM, carrier settings, or an outage with your wireless carrier. Start with the simple checks first. If the issue is on the carrier’s side, changing settings on your iPhone will not bring the signal back until the outage is resolved.

Check Your SIM, eSIM, and Carrier Status
If your iPhone uses a physical SIM card, check that the card is seated correctly and has not been exposed to water. You can remove it and inspect it before putting it back in. A damaged, wet, or incorrectly installed SIM can stop your iPhone from connecting to your carrier.
If you use an eSIM, make sure it is installed correctly. An eSIM problem can produce the same SOS Only message as a physical SIM issue.
Next, check your wireless carrier’s system status page. A carrier outage can affect a large number of customers at once. In that situation, the issue is not necessarily with your iPhone, SIM, or eSIM. You will need to wait for the carrier to restore service before your normal signal returns.
Once you have ruled out a SIM, eSIM, or known carrier problem, check for a carrier settings update on the iPhone.
Install a Carrier Settings Update
Your carrier can provide settings updates that help your iPhone connect correctly to its cellular network. Opening the About screen can trigger the iPhone to download the latest available carrier settings update.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and select General.
- Select About.
- Wait briefly to see whether an update prompt appears.
- If an update is available, install it.
- Restart your iPhone after the update finishes.
If your iPhone displays an update when you open About, install it and then check the status area after restarting. This may be enough to remove SOS Only and restore your carrier signal.
Reset Network Settings If SOS Only Remains
If there is no carrier outage, your SIM or eSIM looks correct, and a carrier settings update did not fix the problem, reset your network settings. This clears network-related settings and can resolve a connection problem that is keeping your iPhone off the cellular network.
Be aware of the tradeoff before you continue. Resetting network settings can remove saved Wi-Fi networks on your iPhone if they are not backed up to iCloud. You will need to reconnect to those networks afterward.
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Scroll to the bottom and choose Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Select Reset.
- Choose Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your iPhone passcode when prompted.
- Confirm that you want to reset the network settings.
Your iPhone will reboot as part of this process. When it turns back on, give it a moment to reconnect to your wireless carrier. Check the top-right area of the screen to see whether your normal signal indicator has returned.
If Your iPhone Still Shows SOS Only
Work through the checks in order. Confirm that your carrier is not experiencing an outage, inspect the physical SIM if you have one, verify the eSIM is installed correctly, and check Settings > General > About for a carrier settings update. Then use Reset Network Settings if the issue continues.
If SOS Only remains after these steps, the problem may still be with the carrier, SIM, or eSIM rather than the iPhone settings. Your carrier can check the status of your cellular service and help determine whether the SIM or eSIM needs attention.
