Install Claude on your Windows computer
You can install the Claude desktop app on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC or laptop from the official Claude website. The setup starts in your browser, then opens the installer and takes you through signing in to an existing Anthropic account or creating a new one.
Before you begin, make sure you can access the email inbox you want to use with Claude. You may need to verify your email during setup.

Download the Claude desktop app
Start by getting the installer from Claude.ai. This helps you avoid downloading an installer from an unofficial source.
- Open a web browser on your Windows PC or laptop.
- Go to Claude.ai.
- Scroll down the page until you see Download desktop app.
- Select Download desktop app to download the Claude installer.
- Save the file if your browser asks where to save it.
Your browser will usually save the installer in your Downloads folder. If you are using a browser that shows completed downloads in the top-right corner, select its download icon to locate the file as soon as the download finishes.
Run the installer and start setup
Open the downloaded Claude file to begin installing the app. The installation process starts automatically after you open it.
- Select the downloaded Claude installer from your browser’s download list, or open it from the Downloads folder.
- Wait for Claude to begin installing on your computer.
- When the Claude setup screen appears, select Get started.
- Select Continue with email.
At this point, enter the email address connected to your Claude account. If you do not already have an account, enter the email address you want to use to create one.
Verify your email and sign in
Claude needs to verify your email before it can finish signing you in. Check the inbox for the address you entered during setup.
The verification process can look slightly different depending on the email Claude sends. You may receive a verification code to enter, or you may receive a link that opens the Claude app instead.
- Open the verification email from Claude.
- Use the verification code if the email provides one.
- If the email includes a sign-in link, open the link.
- When your browser asks for permission to open the app on your computer, select Allow.
After you allow the browser to open the app, Claude should return to the desktop app. If you signed in with an existing account, you should be logged in. New users will continue through account creation.
Finish creating a new Claude account
If you are creating an account, Claude will ask for a few details before opening the main app. Follow the prompts shown on screen.
- Choose your plan. You can select Free to start with the free plan.
- Review the setting that controls whether AI models can use your chats as training material.
- Turn that option off if you do not want your chats used this way, then select Continue.
- Enter your name and continue.
- Select your role.
- Choose what you plan to use Claude for.
These setup questions help complete your profile. Once you finish them, Claude opens in the desktop app.
Start using Claude from the desktop app
After setup, you can begin chatting with Claude directly from your Windows computer instead of opening the browser version each time. You can also create projects from within the app.
Keep the app installed so you can launch it whenever you need it. If you use Claude with more than one email address, check which account is signed in before starting a new chat or project.
If the app does not open after verification, return to the email and use the sign-in link again. When the browser prompt appears, allow it to open Claude on your computer. You can also reopen the downloaded installer if the initial installation did not finish.
Once Claude is open and you can see the chat screen, the installation and sign-in process is complete.
