Install the official ChatGPT app from Microsoft Store
You can download ChatGPT on a Windows laptop or PC through the Microsoft Store. This is the quickest way to install the desktop app and keep it separate from your web browser.
The important part is choosing the real app. When you search the Store, check that the developer is OpenAI before installing anything. Then you can sign in and start using ChatGPT from its own app window.

Download ChatGPT on your Windows computer

Select the Windows Start button on your taskbar.

Type store into the search box.

Select Microsoft Store when it appears under Best match.

When Microsoft Store opens, select the search area at the top of the window.

Search for ChatGPT.

Select the ChatGPT result, then check that OpenAI is listed as the developer. This helps you avoid installing an unrelated app with a similar name.

Select Get to begin the download.

If Windows asks if you want to allow the app to make changes to your device, select Yes. This permission lets the installation continue.

Wait while Windows downloads and installs the app. The time needed depends on your internet connection and computer.

Select Open once that button appears. ChatGPT is now installed on your Windows PC or laptop.
Sign in or create your ChatGPT account
Opening the app takes you to the ChatGPT sign-in screen. Use the account you already use for ChatGPT and complete the sign-in process.
If you do not have an account yet, select Sign up instead. Follow the account setup prompts shown in the app. You may also be asked for some information about the kind of work you do before reaching the main ChatGPT screen.
After you finish signing in, the ChatGPT app opens and you can begin entering questions or requests. Since the app is installed on your computer, you do not need to open a web browser each time you want to use ChatGPT.
How to confirm you installed the correct app
A search for ChatGPT can show more than one result. Do not rely only on the app name or icon. Before selecting Get, look for the developer name on the Microsoft Store listing.
The official listing identifies the developer as OpenAI. If the result shows a different developer, return to the search results and choose the one from OpenAI. Taking a moment to check this detail is the simplest way to make sure you are downloading the intended ChatGPT app.
What to do if the installation does not start
First, make sure you selected Get on the listing from OpenAI. If Windows displays the permission message, choose Yes. The installation cannot proceed until that prompt is approved.
After approving it, give Microsoft Store time to finish the download. Do not expect ChatGPT to open immediately while the button still shows that it is being installed. When the button changes to Open, the process is complete and you can launch the app.
If you close the Store after installation, you can search for ChatGPT from the Windows Start button to open it again. Sign in if prompted, and then use the app directly from your desktop.
Use ChatGPT from your desktop
Once installed, ChatGPT works as a dedicated Windows app. You can keep it available separately from browser tabs, which makes it easier to return to your chats when you need help writing, researching, planning, or answering questions.
Your first task after installation is simply to sign in, or choose Sign up if you need an account. From there, the main ChatGPT window is ready for you to start a conversation on your Windows laptop or PC.
