How to Fix Frozen or Unresponsive iPad

A frozen iPad can leave you unable to tap the screen, open apps, or turn the device off normally. The quickest fix shown here is a force restart. You use the physical buttons to restart the iPad when the touchscreen will not respond.

This method uses the Volume Up, Volume Down, and Power buttons. The button presses need to happen in the right order, so do not hold either volume button down.

Force restart your frozen iPad

Start by locating the three buttons you need. Find Volume Up, Volume Down, and the Power button. The Power button is the one you will hold at the end of the process.

  1. Quickly press and release Volume Up.
  2. Quickly press and release Volume Down.
  3. Press and hold the Power button.
  4. Keep holding the Power button until the screen turns off.
  5. Release the Power button after the display goes black.

The important part is the timing. The Volume Up and Volume Down presses are short presses only. After that, hold the Power button continuously. Do not release it just because the iPad has not reacted immediately.

Wait for the Apple logo

Once the screen turns off, the iPad has begun the forced reboot. After about five seconds, the Apple logo should appear again. This means the iPad is starting back up.

Give the device time to finish booting. When the Lock Screen returns, unlock your iPad as usual and check that the screen responds to touch again. You should then be able to use apps and controls normally.

What this fix handles

A force restart is useful when your iPad is stuck and you cannot control it through the touchscreen. For example, the screen may be frozen on an app, the display may not react to taps, or the normal shutdown controls may be unavailable because the iPad is not responding.

Instead of waiting for the battery to drain, the physical button sequence gives you a way to restart the device right away. It does not require you to open Settings, use the Control Center, or interact with anything on the display.

Use the button sequence carefully

Follow the order exactly: Volume Up first, Volume Down second, then hold Power. If you hold a volume button instead of quickly pressing it, start over and try the sequence again from the beginning.

Keep holding the Power button until the display turns off. Releasing it too soon can prevent the restart from completing. Once the screen is black, let go and wait for the Apple logo to return.

After your iPad restarts

When the iPad powers back on, unlock it and test the parts that were frozen. Tap the screen, open an app, and confirm that the device responds normally. If it does, the forced restart fixed the immediate frozen state.

This is the button method demonstrated for an unresponsive iPad that has Volume Up, Volume Down, and a Power button available. It is a practical first step when you cannot use the screen to restart the iPad normally.
