How to Enter Recovery Options on iPhone

Open the recovery options screen

If your iPhone is stuck, frozen, or not starting normally, the recovery options screen gives you another place to troubleshoot it. On iOS 27, you can reach this screen by turning off the iPhone first, then continuing to hold the power button while it starts back up.

Once the screen loads, you can choose Diagnostic Mode, Recovery Mode, Recovery Assistant, or a full factory reset. The important part is to keep holding the power button after the Apple logo appears.

How to enter iPhone recovery options

  1. Turn off your iPhone. Hold the power button and the Volume Up button at the same time until the swipe to power off screen appears.

  2. Drag the power slider to turn off the phone. Wait until the display is completely black before moving on.

  3. If the button combination does not bring up the power screen, swipe down from the top-right corner of the display. Then hold the power icon until you see the swipe to power off menu.

  4. With the iPhone powered off, press and hold the power button.

  5. Keep holding the button when the Apple logo appears. It can take around 10 to 15 seconds before you see the next message.

  6. Continue holding the power button when your iPhone says Continue Holding for Recovery.

  7. Release the button only after the screen says Loading Recovery Options.

  8. Wait about 20 seconds for the recovery options screen to load.

Choose the recovery option you need

After the recovery options screen opens, select the tool that matches what you are trying to do. The available choices shown here include Diagnostic Mode, Recovery Mode, Recovery Assistant, and a full factory reset.

Diagnostic Mode is the option to select when you need to run diagnostics. Recovery Mode takes you into the iPhone recovery mode option. Recovery Assistant is also available from this screen if that is the recovery tool you need.

Be careful with the full factory reset option. Only select it when a factory reset is what you intend to do. If you only need to inspect the available recovery tools or restart the phone, you do not need to choose that option.

If the recovery screen does not appear

The timing matters here. The most common reason for missing the recovery options screen is releasing the power button at the Apple logo. Do not let go at that point. Keep holding until you see Continue Holding for Recovery, then keep holding until Loading Recovery Options appears.

Also make sure the iPhone was fully turned off before you started. After using the power slider, wait for the screen to go completely black. Starting from a fully powered-off phone helps you follow the button sequence correctly.

If you used the alternate shutdown method, swipe down from the top right, hold the power icon, and use the swipe to power off menu. Once the display is black, hold the power button again and follow the same prompts.

Exit recovery options and restart your iPhone

You can leave the recovery options screen without selecting one of the recovery tools. Select the power button on the recovery options screen, then select Restart.

Your iPhone will reboot and will no longer be in recovery options after it starts again. This is useful if you entered the screen to check the available options but do not need to run diagnostics, use Recovery Mode, use Recovery Assistant, or reset the device.

Remember the sequence: turn the iPhone off, hold the power button, keep holding through the Apple logo, and wait for Loading Recovery Options. That is the part that gets you to the recovery tools.
