Remove the Gmail account without deleting it
You can remove a Gmail or Google account from your iPhone through the Mail settings. This stops that account from syncing with the iPhone, including its email, contacts, and calendars. It does not permanently delete the Gmail address or the Google account.
This is useful if you no longer use an old work, school, or personal address on this phone. After you remove it, that account will no longer appear in the iPhone’s Mail account list. You can still use the same Google account elsewhere, including on another device.
Before you begin, make sure you select the correct Gmail account. If you have more than one Google account connected to your iPhone, each one can be listed separately under Mail Accounts.

How to delete a Gmail account from your iPhone
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll to the bottom of Settings and select Search.
- Type Mail into the search field.
- Select Mail when it appears under Apps.
- Select Mail Accounts.
- Choose the Gmail account that you want to remove.
- Select Delete Account.
- Confirm by selecting Delete from My iPhone.
Give your iPhone a moment to process the change. When the Gmail account no longer appears under Mail Accounts, it has been removed from the iPhone.
What deleting the account from your iPhone does
The wording Delete Account can sound more serious than it is. In this screen, it removes the Google account’s connection to your iPhone. It does not erase the account from Google.
Your Gmail messages remain in the Gmail account. Your contacts and calendars remain associated with that Google account as well. You can access them from another device where you are signed in, or add the account back to this iPhone later if needed.
Once removed, the account stops syncing email to the iPhone. You also stop receiving new mail from that account through the iPhone’s connected Mail account. Google contacts and calendars connected through this account are removed from the phone’s syncing setup too.
Check that you removed the right account
If several accounts are connected, take a second to review the account you selected before confirming the deletion. The Mail Accounts screen can contain multiple Gmail entries, along with accounts from other providers. Removing one Gmail account does not automatically remove the others.
After confirming Delete from My iPhone, return to Mail Accounts. The Gmail account you removed should no longer be listed. If it is still shown, wait briefly and check the list again.
If you accidentally remove the wrong Gmail account, the important part is that the Google account itself is still active. This process only removes it from the iPhone. You can reconnect it later when you need that email, contact, or calendar information on the device again.
Delete Account vs. deleting your Google account
These are two very different actions. Deleting a Google account is permanent and affects Google services tied to that account. Removing the account from the iPhone only changes what is connected and synced on this specific phone.
Use Delete Account in the iPhone Mail account settings when your goal is to stop seeing one Gmail inbox on the device. This is the right option when you are cleaning up old accounts, changing phones, or no longer need an address synced to your iPhone.
After the account disappears from Mail Accounts, the removal is complete. Your Gmail account remains available outside of this iPhone.
