How to Set Timer on iPhone Camera

You can use the Camera app timer when you need a few seconds to get into a photo before your iPhone takes it. It is useful for group shots, selfies, and self-portraits where you do not want to hold the phone or press the shutter at the last second.

The timer works from Photo mode. Choose a countdown, press the capture button, and your iPhone takes the picture automatically when the countdown ends.

Turn on the camera timer

Open the built-in Camera app and set up your shot before starting the countdown. You can place your iPhone on a stable surface, use a stand, or hold it in position until you are ready.

  1. Open the Camera app on your iPhone.
  2. Make sure Photo is selected as the camera mode.
  3. Select the small icon in the top-right corner to open the camera menu.
  4. Select Timer.
  5. Choose the countdown length you want to use.

The first timer option is a 3-second countdown. Tap the timer option again to move through the available delays, including 5 seconds and 10 seconds. Stop when the delay you want is selected.

After you choose a timer, return to the main camera view. A small number appears in the top-left area of the screen. For example, a 3 means the 3-second timer is active. This is a quick way to confirm that the timer is on before you take the photo.

Take a timed photo

Once the timer is selected, frame the photo as normal. Make sure everyone can fit in the image and that the iPhone will stay still during the countdown.

  1. Tap the capture button.
  2. Move into position if you are taking a selfie, group photo, or self-portrait.
  3. Wait for the countdown to finish.
  4. Let the iPhone take the photo automatically.

During the countdown, the camera flashes. If the front of the phone faces you, the flashing gives you a visual signal that the timer is running. After the selected number of seconds, the Camera app captures the picture.

Choose the right countdown length

Use the 3-second timer when you are already close to the phone and only need time to steady yourself or remove your hand after pressing the capture button. It also works well when the iPhone is positioned for a quick selfie.

Pick 5 seconds when you need a little more time to step back into the frame. This can be helpful when you are taking a photo with one or two other people and the phone is nearby.

Use the 10-second timer for group photos or self-portraits where you need to walk farther from the iPhone. Set up the shot first, press the capture button, then move into your planned spot before the timer ends.

Check the photo after the timer ends

After the countdown, the image is saved like any other photo you take with the Camera app. Check the result and retake it if someone moved, blinked, or was not ready when the timer finished.

If you need another timed photo with the same delay, keep the timer enabled and press the capture button again. Check the number in the top-left corner each time so you know which countdown is selected. When you want to take normal photos again, open the camera menu, select Timer, and change the setting from there.

When the iPhone camera timer helps most

The camera timer is a simple way to avoid rushing photos. You can set your iPhone down for a family picture, take a hands-free selfie, or capture a self-portrait without someone else pressing the shutter. The flashing countdown also helps you time your pose when the screen is facing you.

For the best result, frame the image before you start the timer, keep the iPhone steady, and choose enough time to get into place. A 3-second delay is quick, while a 10-second delay gives you more room to move.
