If your Acer laptop will not turn on, will not charge, or only shows a black screen, start by disconnecting every cable and performing a hard reset. This can clear a temporary power problem without deleting files from the computer.
The process applies when an Acer laptop appears completely unresponsive, including an Acer Aspire, Swift, Nitro, or Predator model. You only need access to the laptop, its power button, and its charging cable.

Disconnect everything first
External connections can interfere with startup or make it harder to identify a power issue. Before you reset the laptop, remove every connection from it. Do not leave the charger connected during the reset.
- Unplug the charging cable from the Acer laptop.
- Disconnect any HDMI cable connected to the laptop.
- Remove anything else plugged into the laptop’s connectors.
- Check the sides and back of the laptop for ports you may have missed.
- Disconnect cables from both ends where applicable, so the laptop has no external connections.
This step is simple, but it matters. The goal is to leave the Acer laptop fully disconnected before you use the power button for the hard reset.
Perform a hard reset on the Acer laptop
A hard reset forces the laptop to restart its power state. It does not remove your files. You are not resetting Windows, erasing the drive, or changing your personal data.
- Find the laptop’s Power button. Its location varies by Acer model, but it may be toward the top area of the keyboard.
- With every cable still unplugged, press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds.
- Keep holding the button for the full time, even if you see a light flash or another brief response.
- Release the Power button after around 15 seconds.
- Wait a couple of seconds before reconnecting power.
This is the main fix to try when the laptop has no power, refuses to boot, or seems stuck on a black screen. A brief flash while you hold the button can be normal. Continue holding the button instead of pressing it repeatedly.
Reconnect the charger carefully
After the hard reset, connect the power cable again so the laptop can charge. Check each part of the charger connection as you do this.
- Plug the charging cable back into the Acer laptop.
- If your charger has a separate box or power adapter between the wall connection and laptop cable, make sure its connections are fully attached.
- Check that the charging cable is seated properly at the laptop and at the adapter connection.
- Leave the power cable connected, then prepare to turn the laptop on.
Pay close attention to chargers with a small box in the middle of the cable. If that box plugs into another cable, confirm the connection is secure. A loose connection there can prevent the laptop from receiving power even though the cable looks connected at first glance.
Turn the laptop back on
With the charger connected, press and hold the Power button for two to three seconds. Then release it and give the laptop time to respond.
It may take longer than usual to start after the hard reset. In the demonstrated process, the display came on after about seven seconds and the laptop began booting. Do not assume the attempt failed immediately if the screen stays black for a few seconds after you press the button.
When the Acer logo or your normal sign-in screen appears, the laptop has restarted successfully. You can then log in and use the computer as usual.
What this process helps you check
These steps address a few common symptoms at once. Disconnecting accessories removes external cables from the startup process. Checking the charger and its adapter connection helps confirm that power can reach the laptop. The hard reset clears the current power state without affecting your saved files.
If your Acer laptop turns on after this process, reconnect any accessories one at a time after it has booted. That makes it easier to notice if a connected cable or device is associated with the issue. If it does not respond, repeat the connection check and make sure the charger and any adapter sections are properly connected before attempting the two to three second power-on press again.
Quick checklist
- Unplug the charger, HDMI cable, and all other connected devices.
- Check every side and the back for additional connectors.
- Hold the Power button for about 15 seconds with everything unplugged.
- Wait a couple of seconds.
- Reconnect the charging cable and confirm any charger box connections are secure.
- Hold the Power button for two to three seconds.
- Allow several seconds for the screen to come on and the laptop to boot.
