Old destinations can clutter Google Maps suggestions and leave searches visible in the app. You can remove one recent search in seconds, or open your Maps history and delete selected entries, selected days, or everything saved for Google Maps.
The steps below use the Google Maps app and work on iPhone, Android phones, and Samsung phones. The quickest option is best when you only need to remove one item. Use the history controls when you want to review more of what Google Maps has saved before deleting it.

Remove one recent search from the search bar
If the destination you want to remove appears as soon as you tap the search bar, you do not need to open your full history. Delete it directly from the recent-search list instead. This is useful for an address, business, city, or other single search you no longer want suggested.
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Select the search bar at the top of the screen.
- Look through the recent searches that appear.
- Find the search you want to remove.
- Drag that item from right to left.
- Keep dragging until you see the red trash can, then release it.
The item disappears from that list. Repeat these steps for any other individual recent searches you want to remove. This option is handy when your search history is mostly useful and you only want to hide a few old destinations.
Open your saved Google Maps search history
Use the saved-history page when you want more control than the recent-search list provides. From there, you can narrow the history to Maps, review entries, and choose how much to delete.
- Return to the main map screen in Google Maps.
- Select the profile icon to the right of the search bar in the top-right corner.
- Select Your data in Maps.
- Scroll down to Your Search services history and select On.
- Under History settings, scroll down and select View and delete saved history.
You are now viewing saved Google history. This area can include searches from Google services, so filter it before deleting if your goal is specifically to delete Google Maps search history.
Filter the history to Google Maps
At the top of the saved-history screen, select Maps. The list now shows your Google Maps search history rather than the broader list of saved Google searches.
Take a moment to check the entries before deleting anything. This gives you a chance to remove one search, clean up a particular day, or clear the full Maps search history. Filtering first helps avoid deleting history outside Google Maps when you only intended to clean up map searches.
Delete selected Maps searches or a specific day
The Maps history view lets you work through the list instead of deleting everything at once. This is the better choice if you want to keep useful destinations and only remove certain searches.
You can delete specific entries in the list. You can also delete specific days of activity. If you have a rough idea when you searched for a place, use the dates in the history to locate that group of searches. The history page also includes search controls to help you find an entry before removing it.
After you delete an entry or day, check the list again to make sure the item is gone. Your remaining Maps searches stay available, so future suggestions can still use the destinations you chose to keep.
Delete all Google Maps search history
If you want a complete reset, stay in the filtered Maps history view and use the delete menu. This removes your entire Google Maps search history, not just the few searches currently visible in the app.
- Select Delete on the Maps history page.
- Select Delete all time.
- Review the information Google displays about what will be deleted.
- Select Delete to confirm.
Google Maps then removes the saved Maps search history covered by that choice. Once you confirm an all-time deletion, you should expect old Maps searches and related suggestions based on them to be removed from the history.
Choose the right deletion method
Use the swipe method when an unwanted destination is sitting in your recent list and you only need to remove that one item. It is the fastest cleanup option.
Use Your data in Maps and View and delete saved history when you need to inspect older activity. That view is the practical choice for deleting entries from a certain date, locating a particular search, or wiping all Google Maps searches at once.
Clearing these searches can make the suggestions in Google Maps less cluttered. It also removes old destinations you may not want appearing whenever you start a new search. If you regularly search for sensitive addresses or places you no longer visit, reviewing the Maps history from time to time keeps the list more relevant.
