Download Steam from the Official Website
To download Steam on macOS, use Steam’s official website rather than a third-party download source. The installer works on MacBooks, Mac minis, and other Macs running macOS.
You will download a file named Steam.dmg, then move the Steam app into your Applications folder. After that, you can sign in and get to your existing game library.

Install Steam on Your Mac
- Open a web browser on your Mac and go to steampowered.com.
- Select Install Steam in the top-right corner of the Steam website.
- Select Install Steam again on the download page. Steam should detect that you are using a Mac and show the Apple icon.
- Save the Steam.dmg installer file to your Mac.
- Open a Finder window after the download finishes.
- Select Downloads from the left sidebar, then find Steam.dmg.
- Double-click Steam.dmg to open the installer window.
- Drag the Steam icon onto the Applications folder in that window.
Dragging the app into Applications installs Steam where your Mac keeps apps. When the Applications folder opens, you should see Steam listed there.
Open Steam for the First Time
Open Steam from the Applications folder by double-clicking it. macOS may display a message saying that Steam was downloaded from the internet and ask if you are sure you want to open it.
Because you downloaded the installer from Steam’s official website, select Open. Steam will then download its current version to your Mac. Give it a moment to finish before trying to sign in.
You may also see permission requests while Steam starts. For example, Steam can ask to find devices on your network. Select Allow for permissions you want Steam to use so you can use its available features.
Sign In or Create a Steam Account
Once Steam finishes setting up, sign in with your Steam account details. If you already use the Steam mobile app and are signed in there, you can use the QR code shown in Steam to sign in.
If you do not have an account yet, select Create a Free Account. Follow the account setup prompts, then return to Steam and sign in when your account is ready.
After you sign in, Steam opens your account on the Mac. You can browse the Steam store, view games you already own, and install games that support macOS.
Find Your Games in Steam
Select Library in Steam to see games previously purchased through your account. This is the quickest place to check what you already own before buying anything new.
Not every Steam game is available for macOS. Check a game’s platform information before installing it to make sure it supports Mac. When you find a compatible game, you can install it from your library and launch it through Steam.
If You Cannot Find the Installer
The Steam installer is usually in Finder’s Downloads folder. Look for the file named Steam.dmg. If it is not there, check your browser’s downloads list to confirm that the download completed.
If Steam is already installed but you cannot locate it, open Finder and check your Applications folder. Steam should be there after you drag the icon into Applications during installation.
Once Steam is installed, you do not need to open the DMG file every time. Open Steam directly from Applications, then sign in to access your library.
