Hide a desktop app icon without uninstalling it
You can hide an app icon from your Windows 11 desktop in a few clicks. This is useful when you want a cleaner desktop or do not want a particular program shortcut sitting in plain sight. The app stays installed, and you can still open it later.
This method hides the desktop item you select. It does not uninstall the program, remove it from Windows, or stop it from appearing when you search for it with the Start button. Think of it as hiding a shortcut from the desktop rather than hiding the entire app from your computer.

How to hide an app on the Windows 11 desktop
Start from your Windows 11 desktop and locate the app icon you want to get out of sight. You will change an attribute in that item’s properties.
- Right-click the app icon on your desktop.
- Select Properties from the menu that appears.
- In the Properties window, select the General tab at the top.
- Look at the Attributes section near the bottom of the window.
- Select the checkbox next to Hidden.
- Select OK.
The app icon will disappear from your desktop. You do not need to delete the icon or uninstall the app to remove it from view.
What hiding the icon changes
Hiding an icon is a simple way to reduce desktop clutter. If you have apps you rarely use, or shortcuts you do not want visible all the time, this lets you keep them off the desktop while leaving the programs available on your PC.
It also helps keep a shared computer’s desktop a little less revealing. For example, someone looking at the desktop will not see the specific app icon you hid. Still, this is not a security feature. The app remains installed, and it can still be located through Windows search. Do not rely on a hidden desktop icon to keep an app private from someone who can use your Windows account.
The same point matters if you are organizing rather than hiding. You can use this setting on individual desktop items, so you can keep frequently used apps visible and hide the ones that make the desktop busy.
Open an app after you hide its desktop icon
Once the icon is hidden, you can still launch the app from the Start button. This is the easiest way to get back to an app when its desktop shortcut is no longer visible.
- Select the Start button on the taskbar.
- Type the name of the app you want to open.
- Select the app when it appears in the search results.
Windows can open the app even though its desktop icon is hidden. Hiding the icon only changes what you see on the desktop. It does not change the app itself or prevent it from running.
Keep the difference between an app and its icon clear
The desktop item is your quick access point to the program. When you set that item to Hidden, you are removing that visible desktop access point. The actual application is still on your Windows 11 laptop or PC.
This distinction is useful if you are cleaning up your computer. Uninstalling removes an app. Hiding its desktop icon leaves the app in place. If you use an app occasionally, hiding the icon can be a better option than deleting or uninstalling anything.
If you later need the app, use Start search and type its name. That gives you access without putting the icon back on the desktop first. It is a practical setup for apps you want available but do not need to see every day.
Use this method for a cleaner desktop
Repeat these steps for each desktop app icon you want to hide. Right-click the icon, open Properties, go to General, select Hidden under Attributes, and select OK. Your desktop stays cleaner, while the apps remain installed and searchable from Start.
